“You collect as much data as you can. You immerse yourself in that data, but then make the decision with your heart.” – Jeff Bezos

Underappreciated Work https://nvquanghuy.com/underappreciated-work/ https://nvquanghuy.com/underappreciated-work/#respond Mon, 08 Feb 2016 10:18:00 +0000 https://nvquanghuy.com/?p=20 Often times the hard work done at the foundation level is ignored and underappreciated, while the surface / presentation work is easily spotted and praised by the bystanders. Yet without the foundation work, the surface work would have never been there at the first place.

You praise a house with nice interior design and furniture. You don’t praise a house with stable electricity and water access – that’s a given; yet when the water leaks, guess who gets the complains?

With similar logic, the first engineer who make the code work gets all the credits, even in the sluggish and ugly way. Whereas the next one that tears it apart, refactors to makes it better, more scalable doesn’t get quite as much credit. Yet it’s debatable which course of work is more difficult.

And in lots of case, scaling something up is miles more difficult than just making it work.

The fear of losing things you earn https://nvquanghuy.com/the-fear-of-losing-things-you-earn/ https://nvquanghuy.com/the-fear-of-losing-things-you-earn/#respond Sat, 04 May 2013 10:32:00 +0000 https://nvquanghuy.com/?p=27 When you’re making decent money, don’t let money infuse you the fear of losing money. For now you have so much more to lose. But you didn’t realize you might not deserve that much money at the first place.

People often times undermine the market condition and pure luck, and highly correlate the money they earn to how good they are.

After all you can’t really compare how good a teacher is to how good a software engineer is.

Accepting People https://nvquanghuy.com/accepting-people/ https://nvquanghuy.com/accepting-people/#respond Thu, 16 Aug 2012 10:36:00 +0000 https://nvquanghuy.com/?p=33 Sometimes we tell others about things we think are right for them, thinking we’re kind and doing them a favour. But often times, we’re just the selfish selves trying to squeeze some feeling of influence.

The true kindness comes from the ability to accept others for who they are (or what they’ve done). And only when you’ve learn to accept them, people will be more acceptant to what you say, for it comes from your true heart.

Early-life Job https://nvquanghuy.com/early-life-job/ https://nvquanghuy.com/early-life-job/#respond Sun, 27 Nov 2011 10:39:00 +0000 https://nvquanghuy.com/?p=35 David Ogilvy worked as a chef apprentice before moving into Advertising and became a legend, Dao Hong Tuyen was a homeless shoeshine boy then later became one of the richest Vietnamese businessmen.

Often times we read story about successful figure working as a restaurant waiter in his early life, with the implication of someone who’s less fortunate yet still overcoming hardship to success. While this is true, we failed to realize it’s through those jobs he learnt to overcome his self-esteem, to appreciate the value of hard-earned money and to realize the toughness of life that no formal education would ever come close.

This thought is inspired by my observation of a young Asian waitress around my age working in a nearby Vietnamese restaurant downtown I often frequent.
